The Story

Gavin Lockley writes:

“Ballads of the Bush” is one of my efforts at preserving part of our cultural history.

“Clancy of the Overflow” was written at the suggestion of my friend and collaborative partner, the late Colleen McCullough after I heard her recite, with some relish, the lines:

“And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended,

And at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars”.

The genesis of “Mulga Bill’s Bicycle” was a poem I learnt by memory in Year 4 at Banks Public School, St Clair and recited nervously before the Year 6 class with shaking knees.

“The Ships Ditty” is a set of verses written by myself and inspired by the story of Richard Morgan, a convict in Colleen McCullough’s great epic novel Morgan’s Run, which also formed the basis for Morgan’s Run The Musical – Colleen wrote the lyrics and I composed the music.

“The Man from Ironbark” is a ripping great yarn that, in its bloodthirsty eloquence, leaves the demon barber, Sweeney Todd, for dead.

Also included in this collection are more lyric settings of lesser known but nevertheless exceptionally beautiful poetry: Paterson’s “A Singer of the Bush”, Cuthbertson’s “The Australian Sunrise” and the rollicking triumph of Bruce Simpson’s “Packhorse Drover”.
