Gavin Lockley’s Orchestral Songs of Australia
Favourite poems plus a unique arrangement of “Waltzing Matilda”.

The Story

Gavin Lockley writes:

I have been working on this album just about my whole life – whether from the perspective of the Australian poetry I have chosen or in terms of its orchestration. I remember learning “The Man from Ironbark”, for example, in Year 4 at Banks Public School and reciting it with knocking knees to a Year 6 class. That was my first experience of stage fright perhaps!

The poems of Banjo Patterson, Henry Lawson, C. J. Dennis and John O’Brien were similarly imprinted into the minds of many other young Australian children in the last century.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I conclude a concert and meet someone afterwards who wishes to recite a loved poem, be it “The Man from Ironbark” or a host of others. Suffice to say, a generation grew up with these verses and it is my sincere hope that our own generation passes on these wonderful cultural gems to their children too.

Choosing the best-known verses of such iconic poets and authors and setting them to music orchestrally brings this cultural treasury (or at least some of its poetry) to life all over again.

And last, but by no means least, this album features a fresh arrangement of the essentially Australian verses of a national favourite – “Waltzing Matilda”, first published in 1903.
